Some Insights Auto Insurance Ratings

Securing automobile insurance is one of the most prudent steps to take after purchasing a car. However, there are thousands of insurance companies present, each with their own plans with varying levels of cost and varying levels of coverage. Even after comparing several available auto insurance plans, it might prove difficult for a prospective automobile insurance policy holder to look for a plan that would suit their specific needs due to the number of competing plans and policies to compare and the other inherent complications involved. This is where auto insurance ratings come in.

Auto insurance ratings are rankings of auto insurance companies based on the quality of service they offer. Auto insurance ratings are given by a ratings body that grades automobile insurance companies based on specific criteria. The system of grade may vary. For instance, the US based National Auto Insurance Study gives ratings for specific criterion on a scale of one to five. The UK based Association of British Insurers, on the other hand, gives ratings ranging from one to twenty. Other auto insurance ratings bodies may have their own systems based on stars, percentage points, and so on and so forth. There different bodies that give auto insurance ratings following different formats and systems; the following criterions are almost always rated: price, coverage allowed, ease of payment, general quality of customer service, and overall experience.

It is quite noticeable that three of the five common criteria have nothing to do with the skin and bones of auto insurance, these being price and coverage allowed. Therefore an insurance company might have the best possible price and coverage, but still rate low overall due to the marks it garners in other areas. If an auto insurance ratings body has a grading system that does not break down such categories well, the overall ratings might not reflect where one can get the best possible deals.

Part of the reason for this is because each and every insurance business is basically part of the service industry; as such factors like ease of payment, overall experience, and customer service quality have to be taken into consideration as these things are part of the experience presented by a service company.

Generally speaking of course, the higher the auto insurance ratings of an insurance firm, the more desirable their insurance plans and policies are for prospective plan purchasers. However, one must also note the opinions and scoring of the auto insurance ratings body is respected in the insurance industry. In general, the longer the body has been in existence, the more respected its judgment is. An alternate way to finding the best possible insurance ratings would be to consult consumer advocate groups. These non-profit organizations are less likely to have vested interests in selling auto insurance than auto insurance bodies, which are sometime subject to influence by the insurance industry. They are also more likely to offer specific cases and example when an auto insurance company delivers good or substandard performance. However, these groups are unlikely to have as a wide a selection of auto insurance ratings reviews as compared to bodies dedicated to such. Other alternate sources may include online forums, though the quality of auto insurance ratings is often at poor levels. As always, plenty of research should be done before committing oneself to an insurance policy one might regret.
